Kukatonon offers a weekly African Dance class for our Troupe members. Taught by professionally trained Teaching Artists, this class teaches our dancers about traditional and contemporary West African dance moves, drumming rhythms, and costumes. Working to master complex choreography for Troupe performances, our dancers practice vigorously each week, accompanied by live African drumming. Our Founder and Ne'nee'ket'eh teaches the children about African and African American cultural traditions in conjunction with African Dance class each week.
We are beginning the third year of our successful partnership with The Portland Ballet, the region's foremost pre-professional youth ballet company, to expand access to higher educational opportunities and dance careers for our Troupe members by offering a tuition-free, weekly "Fundamentals of Ballet" class - taught by local ballerina, Mari Juras. This special ballet collaboration is made possible thanks to support from the Regional Arts & Culture Council and Oregon Cultural Trust!
